What is a 1040 and who needs to file one?

Form 1040 is ‘US Individual Income Tax Return.’

A form 1040 is an individual personal tax return that needs to be filed by all US tax residents.  The form is due to be filed by April 15 following the end of the prior calendar year.  An individual taxpayer can file for an extension to extend the tax return due date to October 15.  If a US resident is living outside of the US, the due date for the tax return is June 15 and the extended due date is December 15.

This is an extension to file the return, not to pay the tax.
